Lower Elementary

We have three Lower Elementary classes at MCS, with children ranging from 6 to 9 years old (what would traditionally be considered first through third grade). Elementary classes generally have between 22 and 25 students with two Montessori-trained teachers. Students arrive between 8:15 and 8:30, and the school day ends at 3:15. For those families who need a later pick-up, the elementary late-day program is available until 5:45pm.

Students in the Lower Elementary program have a three-hour work cycle each morning before breaking for lunch and recess. During this time, they select work from one of the areas of the class including math, language, botany, and geography. They also work on group projects, research topics of interest, and receive individual or group lessons.

In addition to work within their classrooms, elementary students also receive formal instruction in Art, Spanish, PE, and Music with specialists. They participate in an opera each year and enjoy many opportunities for field trips, community service and overnight trips (starting in third grade). We also invite guest speakers into the class on a regular basis. Elementary students have their own playground, basketball courts, field and track area to enjoy during recess and after school.

Our elementary students also have many opportunities to participate in after-school activities. Currently, Montessori Community School offers chess club, jazz dance, soccer, art classes and private music lessons.
