Currently, we have two Upper Elementary classes age 9–12 who would traditionally be in fourth through sixth grade. One classroom, which has two certified Montessori teachers and students fourth through sixth grade. The second classroom, currently has fourth and fifth year students and is led by a certified Montessori teacher and an experienced assistant. Upper Elementary students enjoy one of our newest buildings, equipped with a full kitchen and extensive outdoor areas for curriculum extensions.
Upper Elementary students arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 and are dismissed at 3:15. For those families who need a later pick-up, the elementary late-day program is available until 5:45pm. Upper Elementary students begin with a morning circle, set goals and then begin the work cycle. Most specials classes are from 11:30 to 12:30, with a few in the afternoons. Recess is daily after lunch. Popular recess activities include basketball, soccer, four square and volleyball.
During the week, our Upper Elementary students participate in Art, Spanish, PE, and Music classes with specialists. They also perform in the annual MCS opera. They enjoy many enrichment opportunities including field trips, community service projects, and overnight trips. Elementary students have a designated playground, basketball courts, volleyball court, sports field and track area to enjoy during recess and after school.
Upper elementary students have the opportunity to pursue personal interests in weekly studios with the art and music specialists. Elementary students have many opportunities to participate in after school activities as well. Currently, the Montessori Community School offers chess club, jazz dancing, soccer, recorder ensemble, art class and private music lessons.
